How to become a notary in Wyoming

Wyoming commissions its notaries
The Wyoming Secretary of State issues notary commissions. A course completion does not itself authorize you to perform notarial acts. The current application and controlling law determine your eligibility and required steps.
Who may qualify
W.S. 32-3-120 addresses eligibility, including age of at least 18, lawful-presence/status criteria, a qualifying Wyoming residence, employment, practice, or military-family connection, and no applicable disqualification. Review the full requirements before applying.
Education and examination
New and renewing applicants must meet current education and examination requirements. Chapter 6 requires review of the Secretary of State Notary Education Presentation for each term. An approved vendor’s education and examination certificate may be included under the current state application instructions.
Application steps
- Review current qualifications and official education materials.
- Complete the required examination through the state or an approved entity.
- Complete the current application and notarized oath as instructed.
- Submit the application and required filing fee.
- Wait for the state commission and obtain a compliant stamp before beginning work.
Traditional, electronic, and remote acts
Wyoming recognizes traditional personal appearance and compliant remote personal appearance. Electronic records and remote appearance are separate concepts. Remote online notarization uses an electronic record; remote ink notarization is an acknowledgment on a tangible record under the statutory workflow.
Before the first electronic or remote act, the notary must notify the Secretary of State and identify the intended systems or communication technology. Identity, certificate, journal, recording, and other applicable requirements still apply.
